When it comes time to buy a car, you’ll want to choose the right one for you and your family. Making the choice of an SUV requires considering a lot of factors. At Suburban Honda, we make it a priority to help you with that decision.
Two crossover SUVs that drivers often choose when they want a vehicle built for success on the road are the Honda CR-V and the Chevy Equinox. We want you to drive the roads of Farmington Hills, Livingston, or Wayne MI in the right vehicle, so take a closer look at both crossovers in this comparison of the Honda CR-V vs. Chevy Equinox.

The engine is the heartbeat of any vehicle you choose, so you’ll want to get one that will perform well. Both the Honda CR-V and the Chevy Equinox have impressive engines that set the tone for how your vehicle will handle the road.
The Honda CR-V and the Chevy Equinox both have a standard turbocharged 4-cylinder engine under their respective hoods, but the performance differs. In the Honda CR-V, you’ll get an engine that produces 190 horsepower paired with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). The CVT automatically adjusts to your driving, providing smooth, seamless gear changes.
The engine in the Chevy Equinox puts out just 175 horsepower and has a 6-speed automatic transmission, so it’s much more limited in scope than the Honda CR-V.
The CR-V also offers an available hybrid 4-cylinder engine with 204 total system HP, providing both power and efficiency. Unfortunately, the Equinox has just the one engine and goes without a hybrid option.
Another area where these two vehicles differ is fuel efficiency. All 2-wheel drive (2WD) Honda CR-V trim levels get an EPA-estimated 28 city/34 highway MPG compared to an EPA-estimated 24 city/30 highway MPG in the Chevy Equinox.*
The 2WD hybrid engine in the Honda CR-V yields up to an EPA-estimated 43 city/36 highway MPG.* As mentioned previously, the Equinox is not available as a hybrid, so its standard fuel economy is as good as it gets.
When you consider a vehicle for you and your family, safety is a top priority. You’ll want a vehicle that can help protect you and your most precious cargo, no matter what you may encounter on the road.
The Honda CR-V and the Chevy Equinox offer similar safety and driver-assistive technologies to help keep you safe behind the wheel. As part of their standard safety suites, both vehicles provide brand-specific versions of:
- Forward Collision Warning
- Lane Departure Warning
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System
- Collision Mitigation Braking Systemâ„¢
The Honda CR-V takes this a step further by providing several standard features that are only available in upper trims of the Equinox. These additional systems include Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, which automatically adjusts to traffic conditions. In tandem, standard Traffic Jam Assist proves quite handy in the CR-V but isn’t available at all in the Equinox.
Another standard safety feature on the CR-V is the Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Monitor. This useful technology is like having an extra set of eyes watching out for you, even in places you can’t see. Blind spot tech is only an available feature on the Equinox.
Many drivers choose an SUV for the added space it provides for both passengers and cargo. The Honda CR-V and the Chevy Equinox both fulfill that need.
The Honda CR-V and the Chevy Equinox each hold five passengers. They also offer a matching 103.5 cubic feet of passenger volume. You’ll get 39.3 cubic feet of trunk space and 76.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume in the Honda CR-V. In the Chevy Equinox, you’ll have just 29.9 cubic feet in the trunk and a maximum of just 63.9 cubic feet behind the first row.
The Honda CR-V also has slightly larger dimensions for each passenger. Front-row passengers have 41.3 inches of legroom in the Honda CR-V compared to 40.9 inches in the Chevy Equinox. Rear-seat passengers have 41 inches of legroom and 52.6 inches of hip room in the CR-V compared to 39.9 inches of legroom and 51.7 inches of hip room in the Equinox.
When you look at these two SUVs, both have the foundation to be successful on the road. While we believe the Honda CR-V offers more, it’s up to you to make the choice that fits your needs.
