Why Are Oil Changes Important?

Your motor oil manages heat and friction within your engine. You don't need to know much about the mechanics of a combustion engine to imagine that heat can build up fast, especially when you're driving on the highway or towing a trailer. Oil provides the lubrication needed to reduce heat build-up and keep the engine components moving easily.

Engine particles and debris get past the filter and reduce the oil's effectiveness as time passes. When the oil is old enough or dirty enough, excess heat and friction can warp and damage your engine over time.

Routine oil changes keep your engine running smoothly and maximize its longevity. You will find that keeping up with your oil change schedule is easier and much less expensive than dealing with replacing engine components damaged by old oil. When Should I Change My Oil?

We recommend that you change your oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or six months, whichever comes first. You may have heard that the rule of thumb is every 3,000 miles, but most vehicles can travel further before needing an oil change, thanks to improved engine and motor oil technology. Be sure to check your owner's manual and consult one of our technicians to determine your recommended oil change interval.

Keep in mind that your oil change interval may vary depending on the driving conditions and driving habits. Many owner's manuals account for both normal and severe driving conditions when determining when to change the oil. Severe driving conditions may not sound that severe to you when you discover it can be as simple as being stuck in traffic every day.

Some of the driving conditions that are considered severe include:

  • Driving Short Distances
  • Start and Stop Traffic
  • Towing or Carrying Heavy Objects
  • Extreme Hot or Cold Weather While Driving on the Highway
  • Driving on Steep Hills or Mountains Regularly

If you're driving is considered severe, you will likely have to come in earlier for an oil change and adjust your interval.

How Can I Tell if My Motor Oil is Bad?

Most modern vehicles have an alert that will notify the driver that an oil change is needed. However, you can judge the quality of your motor oil for yourself by using the dipstick. Before you get started, be sure to read your owner's manual to ensure that you are doing everything correctly.

When you inspect the oil on the dipstick, it should be a translucent, golden color. If the oil is gritty, dark brown, milky, or comes out in globs, bring your vehicle in for attention as soon as possible.

Red Flags

Besides the oil change interval and inspecting the dipstick, there are some other indicators that your motor oil may need attention. These include:

  • Oil stains underneath your car
  • Low oil pressure indicator
  • Uneven idle
  • Clattering noises
  • Rough performance
